I Know You | Red Dead Redemption | Part 2

Welcome back to Red Dead Redemption! In part two, we analyze our second gameplay video where John attacks Fort Mercer before following Bill's trail to Mexico. In this episode, we react to suicidal cows, a butt picker... and John's jumping skills. More seriously, we talk about how John's past may be perceived, as well as the Strange Man - who is he and how does he know so much about John?

Don't forget to watch or play along - gameplay is posted weekly on our YouTube channel! We'll continue to play Red Dead Redemption and analyze it in our podcast - join us in the coming weeks as we follow John west and discuss his iconic story in detail.

00:00:00 --> 00:00:03 In this episode, we finally see Seth's treasure,
00:00:03 --> 00:00:08 we try to talk down some suicidal cows, and we
00:00:08 --> 00:00:11 fondle a horse. Accurate. Keeping it simple with
00:00:11 --> 00:00:16 that one. Thank you for coming back for more
00:00:16 --> 00:00:18 replay reviews. My name is Leah. And my name
00:00:18 --> 00:00:21 is Kathy. We are two friends who are here to
00:00:21 --> 00:00:23 replay, review, and analyze your favorite video
00:00:23 --> 00:00:26 games. And since Kathy has never seen the games
00:00:26 --> 00:00:28 before, it helps me view them through her fresh
00:00:28 --> 00:00:30 eyes. Almost like I'm discovering them again
00:00:30 --> 00:00:32 for the first time. We hope it will be a similar
00:00:32 --> 00:00:42 experience for you. And he notes that you have
00:00:42 --> 00:00:46 and seen one. John finds Wes Dickens. He says
00:00:46 --> 00:00:49 that they need money to armor his wagon. So he
00:00:49 --> 00:00:52 signed John up for a race. Nigel is just like
00:00:52 --> 00:00:56 stacking the tonics on top of each other and
00:00:56 --> 00:01:00 making John do all the heavy lifting. Yep. I'm
00:01:00 --> 00:01:03 not surprised, but I still am surprised that
00:01:03 --> 00:01:05 John doesn't just fling them off to the side.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:08 John lets people get away with way too much.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:10 Sorry, my printer is ringing. I need to turn
00:01:10 --> 00:01:15 that off. Creepy. For those young children who
00:01:15 --> 00:01:18 don't know what a fax machine is... Oh my god.
00:01:20 --> 00:01:26 It stopped. You don't hear anything, right? No.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:30 That was weird. Someone was trying to fax you.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:34 Yeah. Danielle was the person's name. Do you
00:01:34 --> 00:01:39 know a Danielle? No. From college, yes. She was
00:01:39 --> 00:01:42 a loan shark debt collector. And she got away
00:01:42 --> 00:01:46 with a lot because she was British. Your face.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:48 We're talking about real life right now? Yeah.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:53 You knew a British loan shark in college? Well,
00:01:53 --> 00:01:56 she worked for a loan shark company. She was
00:01:56 --> 00:02:00 doing all the debt collections. This doesn't
00:02:00 --> 00:02:05 sound real. No, no. She was real. I'm just trying
00:02:05 --> 00:02:07 to wrap my brain around that that's a real person.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:12 You knew a British debt collector when you went
00:02:12 --> 00:02:18 to college. I'm sorry. Okay. We need to get back
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 on track because my brain cannot handle that.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:24 So, of course, John wins the race and they leave
00:02:24 --> 00:02:27 with their winnings. And Wes Dickens tells John
00:02:27 --> 00:02:30 to visit his friend Irish, who can help him obtain
00:02:30 --> 00:02:34 some firepower. So John finds him. He saves him
00:02:34 --> 00:02:37 from being drowned by some guys. And then Irish
00:02:37 --> 00:02:40 escorts John to a cabin to steal a machine gun.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:45 But it's not there. I'm getting, like, whiplash
00:02:45 --> 00:02:47 from Irish being like, thank you for saving my
00:02:47 --> 00:02:49 life. And then it's like, I don't know. I don't
00:02:49 --> 00:02:53 owe you anything. And then, but here it is. And
00:02:53 --> 00:02:55 it's all these like back and forth. And we're
00:02:55 --> 00:02:57 part one plus a little bit more into the scheme.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:01 Yet he gets taken advantage of so much. And I
00:03:01 --> 00:03:04 don't, I don't like that for him. The only time
00:03:04 --> 00:03:06 we really see him, I feel like appropriately
00:03:06 --> 00:03:10 angry is when he immediately tracks Irish down
00:03:10 --> 00:03:13 again and kind of encourages him by threatening
00:03:13 --> 00:03:17 him to bring him to a machine gun, which he does.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:20 But then Irish leaves to go take it to Wes Dickens.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:24 Anything else on scene one? No, but it got a
00:03:24 --> 00:03:29 burp, so hold on. Danielle's faxing you a burp.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:34 Scene two. John finds Seth again in Tumbleweed,
00:03:34 --> 00:03:36 and they locate the treasure, which turns out
00:03:36 --> 00:03:43 to be a glass eye. Eye. Yeah, an eye. I hope
00:03:43 --> 00:03:48 we never see... I hope we never have to see Seth
00:03:48 --> 00:03:51 again, because everything that has to do with
00:03:51 --> 00:03:54 him, I don't like. I agree. This seems like he
00:03:54 --> 00:03:57 thinks people were messing with him, giving him
00:03:57 --> 00:03:59 fake maps that led to this fake treasure. I don't
00:03:59 --> 00:04:02 know. But this gives him a reality check, and
00:04:02 --> 00:04:05 he says he's ready to return to the real world,
00:04:05 --> 00:04:08 to the living again, and he's on board to help
00:04:08 --> 00:04:12 John. We're back to Wes Dickens, who gets chased
00:04:12 --> 00:04:16 off during one of his sales pitches. They're
00:04:16 --> 00:04:21 getting chased after, attacked, fired upon. Wes
00:04:21 --> 00:04:23 Dickens is doing nothing. John is doing everything.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:27 He's shooting everyone, right? And John kills
00:04:27 --> 00:04:31 one of their pursuers and Wes Dickens shouts,
00:04:31 --> 00:04:35 Respect science! Isn't it ironic for him, of
00:04:35 --> 00:04:39 all people, to say respect science? He continually
00:04:39 --> 00:04:43 refers to himself as not necessarily a scientist,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:48 but as being involved in science. That's a bit
00:04:48 --> 00:04:52 of a stretch. Yeah. Like the marshal said, he
00:04:52 --> 00:04:55 sells snake oil and bat piss. You're not fooling
00:04:55 --> 00:04:59 anybody. After John escorts West Dickens to safety,
00:04:59 --> 00:05:01 he then heads out to Thieves Landing in search
00:05:01 --> 00:05:06 of Irish. Before we find Irish, though, that
00:05:06 --> 00:05:09 guy picks his butt, right? Mm -hmm. But what's
00:05:09 --> 00:05:12 he doing? He keeps going back at it. He definitely
00:05:12 --> 00:05:15 wants someone to scratch his butt for him. Or
00:05:15 --> 00:05:17 he's knocking on a door while scratching his
00:05:17 --> 00:05:19 ass. Don't touch my door if you're going to be
00:05:19 --> 00:05:23 scratching your butt. At least he was using different
00:05:23 --> 00:05:26 hands. Maybe the other hand has already scratch
00:05:26 --> 00:05:32 -scratched it. Ew. One for the front, one for
00:05:32 --> 00:05:40 the back. Ew, Leah! Ew! Oh my gosh. Okay, anyway.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:44 After witnessing the butt picker, John finds
00:05:44 --> 00:05:48 Irish holding some nuns at gunpoint, as you would.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:52 John's upset because the Gatling gun doesn't
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 work. Irish says he knows where they can find
00:05:54 --> 00:05:57 the parts they need. That was not what I was
00:05:57 --> 00:06:01 expecting to see. Like, nuns in this game, in
00:06:01 --> 00:06:04 a Western game, being held at gunpoint. Not what
00:06:04 --> 00:06:07 I was expecting. I have to say, I do love John
00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 in this moment, though. He's, like... He's super
00:06:10 --> 00:06:13 smooth. He's smooth and he finds this just so
00:06:13 --> 00:06:16 unacceptable. Also, the amnesia line is great.
00:06:17 --> 00:06:25 I'm sure we'll add the clip in. They have to
00:06:25 --> 00:06:29 rescue Irish's contact, Shakey, but are able
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 to get the parts that they need. I'm trying to
00:06:31 --> 00:06:34 be sneaky when I'm rescuing Shakey. I've got
00:06:34 --> 00:06:37 my knife out and I'm crouching. But then they
00:06:37 --> 00:06:41 just all turn around. At the same time? Yeah,
00:06:41 --> 00:06:44 at the same time and so slowly. It's hilarious.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 I remember watching this scene and I was like,
00:06:47 --> 00:06:54 Leah, oh my gosh. It's comedic timing. Yeah,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:58 did not go as planned. Scene four. Irish and
00:06:58 --> 00:07:02 John had stopped at McFarlane's ranch, so John
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 finds Bonnie, who's in the middle of a ranching
00:07:04 --> 00:07:07 crisis. The cattle are at pasture while a storm
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 rolls in, which could scare them into running
00:07:09 --> 00:07:16 off. Which we'll see. Exhibit A of that. So Bonnie
00:07:16 --> 00:07:20 enlists John to help herd them back. I need to
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 know, what kind of game writer thought it would
00:07:22 --> 00:07:25 be a great idea to have cows pretty much launching
00:07:25 --> 00:07:29 themselves off the cliff? Like, suicidal cows?
00:07:30 --> 00:07:33 I don't know. That's not what I was expecting
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 when we said we were going to play Red Dead Redemption.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:40 I've never craved a steak more than on this mission
00:07:40 --> 00:07:44 because I hated these cows. They're so stupid.
00:07:44 --> 00:07:47 I got way ahead of them. They were trying as
00:07:47 --> 00:07:52 hard as they could to fall over that cliff. Least
00:07:52 --> 00:07:55 favorite mission. Anyway, the next day, still
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 at the ranch, Bonnie approaches John saying that
00:07:57 --> 00:08:01 her father was due back hours ago. She's pretty
00:08:01 --> 00:08:04 worried, so they go look for him. They find him
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 having been attacked by wrestlers, but he seems
00:08:06 --> 00:08:10 okay. He sends them back for a wagon, and as
00:08:10 --> 00:08:13 they approach the ranch, they see smoke. The
00:08:13 --> 00:08:17 barn is on fire, Kathy. Then you make John jump
00:08:17 --> 00:08:22 up, but look like an idiot. Why did he jump like
00:08:22 --> 00:08:25 that? It took me 10 years to get into the barn.
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 That was not my first take that made the video.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:32 I had to cut out. A section where I jump and
00:08:32 --> 00:08:37 he flies past the platform onto the ground. And
00:08:37 --> 00:08:40 I'm like, dude. Wait, why didn't you keep that
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 in for me to see so I can criticize your jumping
00:08:42 --> 00:08:45 skills? The videos are already over two hours.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:52 I gotta cut what I can. Anyway, after a decade,
00:08:52 --> 00:08:55 I get into the barn. Someone has barred the door
00:08:55 --> 00:08:58 shut, so it's obviously arson. They save the
00:08:58 --> 00:09:01 horses and then regroup. Bonnie says that they
00:09:01 --> 00:09:03 owe him, but John just asks that they sell him
00:09:03 --> 00:09:06 some cattle once he's back to his normal life.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 Is this foreshadowing something? I feel like
00:09:08 --> 00:09:11 it is a really sweet notion to say that I'm going
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 to make it back home and I hope we're still friends
00:09:13 --> 00:09:15 and I hope you're going to sell some cattle to
00:09:15 --> 00:09:18 me because I prefer to do business with someone
00:09:18 --> 00:09:21 I know. I also can see this being the dream that
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 he wants to have and then he dies at the end
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 of this game, which I don't think so because
00:09:25 --> 00:09:28 there's... more games to Red Dead Redemption
00:09:28 --> 00:09:31 than just his first one. But if this was a standalone,
00:09:31 --> 00:09:35 I could see him dying and be like, oh, I wish
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 I could be back home with my family and my kids
00:09:37 --> 00:09:42 with some cattle from a friend. I mean, yeah,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:46 he could die. I like this ending moment because,
00:09:46 --> 00:09:48 yeah, it seems like at this point they've invested
00:09:48 --> 00:09:53 a lot in each other. So it feels like a relationship
00:09:53 --> 00:09:56 that isn't just going to end more like Wes Dickens
00:09:56 --> 00:09:59 in Irish probably would. But I also like that
00:09:59 --> 00:10:02 we see John sort of like taking a nap at the
00:10:02 --> 00:10:06 end. He's worn out. And this is kind of the first
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 time we've really seen that he's just exhausted.
00:10:08 --> 00:10:11 And he's probably just craving home so much at
00:10:11 --> 00:10:15 this point. Anything else in scene four? Nope.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:20 Okay, moving right along to scene five. John
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 visits the marshal again, and when he enters,
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 we see that Bonnie's father is here, seemingly
00:10:24 --> 00:10:28 very worried about her. They're discussing this.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:32 He's kind of assuming that John is to blame,
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 which I feel like is kind of a bitch move, right?
00:10:34 --> 00:10:37 It is! After everything John has done for you?
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 Soon, a creepy guy arrives. He wants Normandique
00:10:41 --> 00:10:44 in exchange for Bonnie. They agree and head to
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 Tumbleweed, where they're supposed to make the
00:10:46 --> 00:10:53 exchange. Okay. So in response to this exchange
00:10:53 --> 00:10:57 proposal, the Marshal says, we don't make deals
00:10:57 --> 00:11:00 with outlaws. And he responds, yeah, you do.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:05 Is this referencing John? I thought it meant
00:11:05 --> 00:11:08 like there's a darker history to what the Marshal's
00:11:08 --> 00:11:12 past, some skeletons in his closet. Yeah, I just
00:11:12 --> 00:11:15 took it as the yeah, you do is him referencing
00:11:15 --> 00:11:19 John. And the point of it would be. John's tried
00:11:19 --> 00:11:23 to leave that life, but people still see him
00:11:23 --> 00:11:27 as an outlaw, despite that. We get to Tumbleweed.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:30 Of course they break the deal. They shoot their
00:11:30 --> 00:11:35 own man. I wonder if he's feeling betrayed. I
00:11:35 --> 00:11:37 don't think he's feeling anything. Oh, yeah.
00:11:38 --> 00:11:40 Probably right before getting shot at, he's like,
00:11:40 --> 00:11:44 I should have stayed in jail. Right? I mean,
00:11:44 --> 00:11:48 how cold -blooded. Shootout begins. Bonnie is
00:11:48 --> 00:11:52 not brought to them, but she is hung. Thankfully,
00:11:52 --> 00:11:57 John shoots the rope and saves her. She looks
00:11:57 --> 00:12:01 terrible. She looks so bad, but she plays it
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 off pretty well. I mean, we have to mention the
00:12:03 --> 00:12:08 joke. John, in his dumbass way, says, like, oh,
00:12:08 --> 00:12:12 you weren't really helping me. And she's like,
00:12:12 --> 00:12:14 what do you want me to say? It was all tied up.
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 I'm not going to lower myself to make a joke
00:12:15 --> 00:12:18 like that. Like, how do you joke about this already?
00:12:18 --> 00:12:22 That's just John's terrible. Crazy. And he just
00:12:22 --> 00:12:26 shrugs. This is why his wife probably left him.
00:12:30 --> 00:12:33 I'm not going to touch that. After they all ride
00:12:33 --> 00:12:36 off, John visits Wes Dickens. He wants to get
00:12:36 --> 00:12:40 on with the assault, but Nigel is adamant that
00:12:40 --> 00:12:42 they need. more money to make more improvements
00:12:42 --> 00:12:49 do you think uh do we i don't know i feel like
00:12:49 --> 00:12:52 he just has some bills to pay but anyway it's
00:12:52 --> 00:12:55 an of course it's a it's another race well john
00:12:55 --> 00:13:01 wins no surprise any other notes um how many
00:13:01 --> 00:13:03 times did it take you to win did you get it done
00:13:03 --> 00:13:06 in the first try just once yeah at this point
00:13:06 --> 00:13:11 ask me the first time i played i don't know It's
00:13:11 --> 00:13:14 finally time for the assault on Fort Mercer.
00:13:14 --> 00:13:17 John meets up with the Marshal, his deputies,
00:13:17 --> 00:13:21 and Wes Dickens. Irish is nowhere to be seen
00:13:21 --> 00:13:25 yet. Wes Dickens says Seth managed to get himself
00:13:25 --> 00:13:28 inside and that he will delight and amuse them.
00:13:29 --> 00:13:34 He's an entertainer. Yeah, so we see him skipping
00:13:34 --> 00:13:37 and waving at us. Could not be more obvious,
00:13:37 --> 00:13:40 right, that we're scouting out the place because...
00:13:40 --> 00:13:43 Seth's going to give us away. At that point,
00:13:43 --> 00:13:46 Seth should just go like, Hey, John, what are
00:13:46 --> 00:13:49 you doing here? Is that a Gatling gun you got
00:13:49 --> 00:13:53 in the back of that wagon? It is. John hides
00:13:53 --> 00:13:56 in it. And the now armored wagon is driven by
00:13:56 --> 00:14:00 Wes Dickens into the fort. And once they get
00:14:00 --> 00:14:03 in, John starts blasting. And then Wes Dickens
00:14:03 --> 00:14:05 just takes off. He doesn't want to get shot.
00:14:05 --> 00:14:09 Don't blame the man. I have a note here. LOL
00:14:09 --> 00:14:14 the jump at 2706. Which is not the correct timestamp
00:14:14 --> 00:14:18 because I changed the video. But I need to find
00:14:18 --> 00:14:24 what it was. Oh, I know. I know exactly what
00:14:24 --> 00:14:28 it was. Hold on. Okay, so it's more like an hour
00:14:28 --> 00:14:35 40. But here's the... John just can't jump. The
00:14:35 --> 00:14:40 jump controls in this game are not ideal. He
00:14:40 --> 00:14:44 clicks his heels. He does. He clicks his heels.
00:14:45 --> 00:14:51 Oh, John. Anyway, after that, the fort's cleared
00:14:51 --> 00:14:53 out. They regroup, but they can't find Williamson.
00:14:54 --> 00:14:57 Bestickens then returns, saying, please let me
00:14:57 --> 00:14:59 in, warning them that reinforcements are on the
00:14:59 --> 00:15:03 way. So they handle that. Everyone's dead, except
00:15:03 --> 00:15:06 for them. And then they get info out of a hostage.
00:15:06 --> 00:15:11 Sounds like Bill has left for Mexico. Any notes?
00:15:11 --> 00:15:15 Yeah, I want our listeners to know that while
00:15:15 --> 00:15:17 watching this gameplay, you made a comment that
00:15:17 --> 00:15:20 Seth would be so happy to be surrounded by all
00:15:20 --> 00:15:24 these dead bodies. That's why he actually agreed
00:15:24 --> 00:15:26 to help. Yeah. You're going to kill a lot of
00:15:26 --> 00:15:31 people, right? Can I have them? as long as they're
00:15:31 --> 00:15:34 mine when you're done and so at the end of the
00:15:34 --> 00:15:38 scene as john's leaving he kind of has this really
00:15:38 --> 00:15:42 longing gaze for bill's whole hideout do you
00:15:42 --> 00:15:45 think that like is he reminiscing the feeling
00:15:45 --> 00:15:48 of getting shot and almost dying there or like
00:15:48 --> 00:15:51 what does that look to address this i'm gonna
00:15:51 --> 00:15:55 i'm gonna go back just a smidge uh reacting to
00:15:56 --> 00:15:58 The news that Bill has left for Mexico. John
00:15:58 --> 00:16:01 says he's gone to see Javier Escuela. And yes,
00:16:01 --> 00:16:03 we know there's a lot of Spanish words that are
00:16:03 --> 00:16:05 pronounced incorrectly, but that's how they're
00:16:05 --> 00:16:06 pronounced in the game. So we're just going to
00:16:06 --> 00:16:10 go with it. It can be implied that John knows
00:16:10 --> 00:16:12 who Javier is, probably another gang member.
00:16:13 --> 00:16:16 And so I think when he's looking back, he's remembering
00:16:16 --> 00:16:19 the moment he arrived here and saw Bill and got
00:16:19 --> 00:16:22 shot. That obviously dug up things from the past.
00:16:23 --> 00:16:25 And now all of a sudden he's going to Mexico
00:16:25 --> 00:16:28 to find not only Bill, but also Javier. So I
00:16:28 --> 00:16:32 think he's just like, so much has happened already.
00:16:33 --> 00:16:36 I'm getting so involved with the old gang. And
00:16:36 --> 00:16:38 I think he's just looking back at the moment
00:16:38 --> 00:16:42 that all started. I felt like this is the end
00:16:42 --> 00:16:45 of one chapter for John and he might not ever
00:16:45 --> 00:16:49 see Bonnie or these people again because he doesn't
00:16:49 --> 00:16:52 need their help anymore. It sounds like Bill
00:16:52 --> 00:16:55 is heading to somewhere called Chuparosa. And
00:16:55 --> 00:16:57 Irish randomly arrives in the middle of all this
00:16:57 --> 00:17:00 saying, oh man, I was late. Yeah, I'm sure that
00:17:00 --> 00:17:03 was an accident. But he seems familiar and says
00:17:03 --> 00:17:07 that he can get John to Chuparosa. I don't understand
00:17:07 --> 00:17:09 why he had to show up late in this game. Like,
00:17:09 --> 00:17:11 couldn't he have been there the entire time?
00:17:11 --> 00:17:17 I don't know either. John is riding along. He
00:17:17 --> 00:17:21 spots a man off to the side of the road. And
00:17:21 --> 00:17:24 when he approaches, things get weird. I think
00:17:24 --> 00:17:26 we'll just play the full audio in the episode
00:17:26 --> 00:17:28 and maybe we'll watch it again right now. But
00:17:28 --> 00:17:31 this is the one stranger mission I decided to
00:17:31 --> 00:17:34 keep in. It's a weird mission. Yeah. Should we
00:17:34 --> 00:17:37 watch it again real quick? Okay. Hello, John.
00:17:38 --> 00:17:46 John Marston. Do I know you? I hope so. I seem
00:17:46 --> 00:17:49 to know you. I'm pretty good at remembering faces.
00:17:50 --> 00:17:52 Are you? Do you remember Hattie McCourt's face?
00:17:54 --> 00:17:57 Who? She was a girl Dutch van der Linde shot
00:17:57 --> 00:17:59 in the head on that raid on the ferry a few years
00:17:59 --> 00:18:02 back. Same one you got shot on. Pretty girl.
00:18:03 --> 00:18:05 Until her eye was hanging out by a thread of
00:18:05 --> 00:18:07 tendon and her brain was plastered over a wall.
00:18:09 --> 00:18:13 Not really. Then why would you remember me, friend?
00:18:13 --> 00:18:16 You've forgotten far more important people than
00:18:16 --> 00:18:22 me. What's your game, friend? I don't have a
00:18:22 --> 00:18:28 game, John. Listen, sometimes I just wish I'd
00:18:28 --> 00:18:32 known more about life. I wish I'd had better
00:18:32 --> 00:18:36 guidance. A friend of mine is drunk as a skunk
00:18:36 --> 00:18:41 in the saloon on Thieves Landing. I think he's
00:18:41 --> 00:18:45 gonna be unfaithful to his dear wife. Why don't
00:18:45 --> 00:18:47 you head over there? And see if you can advise
00:18:47 --> 00:18:51 him how best to proceed. What do you think I
00:18:51 --> 00:18:57 am? I know what you are, John. Just if you've
00:18:57 --> 00:19:02 got the time, friend. Pretty weird, right? The
00:19:02 --> 00:19:05 fact that he was so nonchalant about Heidi's
00:19:05 --> 00:19:08 face and brain being just blown up to pieces
00:19:08 --> 00:19:11 and painted the walls. He just says that as if
00:19:11 --> 00:19:15 it was casual Tuesday banter. water cooler conversation
00:19:15 --> 00:19:20 why why use that as a quick as a way to explain
00:19:20 --> 00:19:23 quickly that oh so you don't remember that then
00:19:23 --> 00:19:25 you won't remember me like who do you think you
00:19:25 --> 00:19:28 are i like it so yeah he says do you remember
00:19:28 --> 00:19:33 heidi mccord goes into some graphic detail john's
00:19:33 --> 00:19:36 like no and so then he responds then why would
00:19:36 --> 00:19:40 you remember me that hits so hard when you think
00:19:40 --> 00:19:44 about it because it highlights I mean, so far
00:19:44 --> 00:19:46 in this game, John seems like a pretty good person.
00:19:47 --> 00:19:50 But this highlights his background of being quite
00:19:50 --> 00:19:55 not good. And so for him to be like, you couldn't
00:19:55 --> 00:20:00 remember this horrific death, so why would you
00:20:00 --> 00:20:03 know anybody at all? Like, who is worth remembering,
00:20:03 --> 00:20:07 essentially? To play the devil's advocate, though,
00:20:07 --> 00:20:10 in John's defense, Maybe he has to not remember
00:20:10 --> 00:20:12 these people to be able to move forward with
00:20:12 --> 00:20:14 what he does today. Like, if he was a bounty
00:20:14 --> 00:20:16 hunter, he has to compartmentalize. So maybe
00:20:16 --> 00:20:21 it's just him or his way of coping with all the
00:20:21 --> 00:20:24 death and all the bad stuff that he sees in his
00:20:24 --> 00:20:27 line of work. Building off of that, he proceeds
00:20:27 --> 00:20:29 to ask John to find his friend who's about to
00:20:29 --> 00:20:31 cheat on his wife and says, see if you can advise
00:20:31 --> 00:20:35 him how best to proceed. So I feel like John
00:20:35 --> 00:20:39 is being given a moment here to... sort of replace
00:20:39 --> 00:20:43 those compartmentalized events and not necessarily
00:20:43 --> 00:20:46 make up for them but prove that he has really
00:20:46 --> 00:20:50 changed do we need john to be the one who does
00:20:50 --> 00:20:53 this is this some kind of like a redemption act
00:20:53 --> 00:20:56 or why couldn't the the guy just do it himself
00:20:56 --> 00:20:59 well let's go back to the start because he says
00:20:59 --> 00:21:03 i've been waiting for you hello john john marston
00:21:03 --> 00:21:07 He clearly seems to know him. John has no idea
00:21:07 --> 00:21:10 who he is. This man knows intimate details of
00:21:10 --> 00:21:13 his past in the gang and of other members' actions,
00:21:13 --> 00:21:16 too. How would you know those things unless you
00:21:16 --> 00:21:20 were there or you were some sort of agent that
00:21:20 --> 00:21:23 was investigating these crimes? He knows a lot
00:21:23 --> 00:21:27 of information, so the controversy around this
00:21:27 --> 00:21:31 stranger mission is, who is this guy? It seems
00:21:31 --> 00:21:34 to me like he's testing John. he might secretly
00:21:34 --> 00:21:39 be trying to advocate for john for him to do
00:21:39 --> 00:21:42 more good stuff so when the time comes he's able
00:21:42 --> 00:21:45 to make the argument saying like oh john john
00:21:45 --> 00:21:48 saves that guy from cheating on his wife and
00:21:48 --> 00:21:51 john did this and john did that and therefore
00:21:51 --> 00:21:55 he's he's cool he's one of us he seems very this
00:21:55 --> 00:21:58 man seems very just matter of fact he doesn't
00:21:58 --> 00:22:02 seem Like he's out to prove John is bad or prove
00:22:02 --> 00:22:05 John is good. It seems like he's more just interested
00:22:05 --> 00:22:10 to see what will John do? Who is John now? He
00:22:10 --> 00:22:13 knows who John has been, but now he's wanting
00:22:13 --> 00:22:18 to know more where John lies. Because he's lived
00:22:18 --> 00:22:21 two lives now at this point. I lean towards this
00:22:21 --> 00:22:25 is more of a supernatural being than a person.
00:22:26 --> 00:22:30 But we will see this guy again, and I think you'll
00:22:30 --> 00:22:35 develop more theories about him. Well, John heads
00:22:35 --> 00:22:37 to Thieves Landing and decides to discourage
00:22:37 --> 00:22:41 the man from cheating. I love when John walks
00:22:41 --> 00:22:43 up and he's like, excuse me. And the guy's like,
00:22:43 --> 00:22:47 yeah, what the hell do you want? This is why
00:22:47 --> 00:22:50 you should be a voice actor, Leah. It's so funny.
00:22:51 --> 00:22:55 I love it. But despite that. In the end, he is
00:22:55 --> 00:22:59 grateful for John's intervention. And that's
00:22:59 --> 00:23:02 the end of the scene. Really weird, random kind
00:23:02 --> 00:23:05 of palate cleanser, huh? It's definitely one
00:23:05 --> 00:23:09 -of -a -kind palate cleanser. Are we ready for
00:23:09 --> 00:23:12 the final scene? Mm -hmm. We meet up with Irish,
00:23:13 --> 00:23:15 where he told us to go. West Dickens is also
00:23:15 --> 00:23:17 there, I guess, to say goodbye. We head across
00:23:17 --> 00:23:20 the river, only to be greeted by gunfire. Turns
00:23:20 --> 00:23:24 out Irish is a wanted man in Mexico. Well, then
00:23:24 --> 00:23:27 we proceed to have the longest boat shooting
00:23:27 --> 00:23:31 scene in the history of video games. Because,
00:23:31 --> 00:23:35 holy cow, that was like 20 minutes. I'm just
00:23:35 --> 00:23:40 laughing at your, well, like I already knew you
00:23:40 --> 00:23:43 were bringing some sauce with you on your sentence.
00:23:43 --> 00:23:46 I was trying so hard to not fall asleep because
00:23:46 --> 00:23:48 it was so boring. Just like shooting people,
00:23:48 --> 00:23:50 watching people fall into the cliff like the
00:23:50 --> 00:23:57 cows that were jumping off. Yeah. Yep. I won't
00:23:57 --> 00:24:02 disagree. And I died, which made it longer. But
00:24:02 --> 00:24:05 anyway, we eventually get to the other side after
00:24:05 --> 00:24:09 killing, I think, everyone in Mexico. They steal
00:24:09 --> 00:24:14 horses of the deceased. And Irish just gets all
00:24:14 --> 00:24:18 up in there. Gets a handful. I don't know what's
00:24:18 --> 00:24:22 wrong with him. A lot. But after that. John gets
00:24:22 --> 00:24:25 directions from Irish. He tells him how to get
00:24:25 --> 00:24:27 to Chuparosa, but also mentions that there's
00:24:27 --> 00:24:30 a general he could meet in a town called Escalera
00:24:30 --> 00:24:34 as well. So John heads out. Irish sounds like
00:24:34 --> 00:24:37 he's just making a run for it. And this is when
00:24:37 --> 00:24:39 we get something that happens a lot in this franchise,
00:24:40 --> 00:24:43 which is a cinematic horse ride. I love these
00:24:43 --> 00:24:46 moments. This one went on for a long time because
00:24:46 --> 00:24:49 I turned off the mini -map. I was going off of
00:24:49 --> 00:24:52 memory how to get to Chuparosa. Did not take
00:24:52 --> 00:24:57 the fastest route. You did not. I like this moment.
00:24:57 --> 00:25:01 How do you feel about it? It is great, but I
00:25:01 --> 00:25:03 could see you panicking towards the end, too.
00:25:03 --> 00:25:06 You gotta sync up the writing and the music.
00:25:07 --> 00:25:10 I tried so hard to make it as cinematic as possible.
00:25:10 --> 00:25:12 I do appreciate, though, that the game makes
00:25:12 --> 00:25:15 use of long rides to make them artistic like
00:25:15 --> 00:25:19 this. So he arrives. He does not get a warm welcome.
00:25:19 --> 00:25:22 He ends up shooting three men, one of which stole
00:25:22 --> 00:25:25 his hat. I love that he headshots the first two
00:25:25 --> 00:25:27 men, but then shoots the last one in the stomach
00:25:27 --> 00:25:31 to not risk putting a hole in his hat. I feel
00:25:31 --> 00:25:34 like that's unfair, though, to directly just
00:25:34 --> 00:25:36 quickly kill those two and then just leave this
00:25:36 --> 00:25:42 guy hanging by himself. Bleeding out. Very interesting
00:25:42 --> 00:25:46 scene there. I enjoy it, but I don't know if
00:25:46 --> 00:25:49 I should. Because it's kind of the most ruthless
00:25:49 --> 00:25:52 we've seen, John. But those guys were a bit of
00:25:52 --> 00:25:55 bullies. They were. And I guess you would get
00:25:55 --> 00:25:58 shot for less back then, so. But during this
00:25:58 --> 00:26:01 altercation, we see that someone is observing,
00:26:01 --> 00:26:05 and he soon approaches John. He's not very happy
00:26:05 --> 00:26:09 with how John has handled himself, but he does
00:26:09 --> 00:26:12 offer to help him improve his shooting. So kind
00:26:12 --> 00:26:14 of an odd turn of events. Which I feel like John
00:26:14 --> 00:26:16 already knows how to shoot, right? Like, he was
00:26:16 --> 00:26:20 a gunslinger. Yeah, I don't know how I felt about
00:26:20 --> 00:26:24 it, because on one hand, John has been doing
00:26:24 --> 00:26:26 pretty good himself, so I felt like he didn't
00:26:26 --> 00:26:30 need any help. But his interaction is a bit weird,
00:26:30 --> 00:26:33 too, where I have a conversation about how his
00:26:33 --> 00:26:36 name doesn't matter anymore. We learn that his
00:26:36 --> 00:26:40 name is Landon Ricketts. He was a famous gunslinger
00:26:40 --> 00:26:43 from when John was a boy. I feel like he's just
00:26:43 --> 00:26:45 waiting to die or something. He's got a weird
00:26:45 --> 00:26:47 vibe about him. I don't understand how he ended
00:26:47 --> 00:26:51 up here and stayed here. Okay, I can see him
00:26:51 --> 00:26:55 coming here to hide, but why stay here? But he
00:26:55 --> 00:26:57 does give John a lowdown on the state of things
00:26:57 --> 00:27:00 in Mexico. It seems there are two sides and the
00:27:00 --> 00:27:04 peasants are stuck in the middle. So there's
00:27:04 --> 00:27:06 basically like civil war, revolutionary war happening
00:27:06 --> 00:27:10 in Mexico. And somehow Landon is like... the
00:27:10 --> 00:27:15 savior for this town. Yeah, he is. Speaking of,
00:27:15 --> 00:27:17 a man from the bank, Ramon, runs to Ricketts
00:27:17 --> 00:27:20 asking for help. Their bank wagon is under attack,
00:27:21 --> 00:27:25 so he and John go save it. Of course, John is
00:27:25 --> 00:27:29 involved in more business of this town immediately
00:27:29 --> 00:27:33 after killing three of them. I know. He's already
00:27:33 --> 00:27:35 helping people that he doesn't have to be helping.
00:27:36 --> 00:27:38 Although maybe it makes up for shooting those
00:27:38 --> 00:27:41 guys. Oh, also, there was a funny glitch when
00:27:41 --> 00:27:45 Lana just kept walking into a horse ass. Just
00:27:45 --> 00:27:49 kept going. And then in the background of a cutscene,
00:27:49 --> 00:27:53 some guy's just standing on a table. So we can
00:27:53 --> 00:27:57 add those to the glitch tracker. And those are
00:27:57 --> 00:28:00 my notes. John's in Mexico now. Anything else
00:28:00 --> 00:28:05 from you? No, that's it for me, too. That's it.
00:28:06 --> 00:28:10 Pretty short and sweet, in a way. gameplay will
00:28:10 --> 00:28:13 be up tomorrow for part three and we'll talk
00:28:13 --> 00:28:16 about it next week is there anything else we
